My Skin Regimen, Part 1

Hello wonderful people! Today’s post is brought to you by questions I received regarding my skin care. I will provide an overview of the steps I take to keep my skin clear and refreshed. This will be in two parts as it may be quite long for some.

**First, a note. This is what works for me. This may not necessarily work for you. As I am not a doctor or a dermatologist, please do not take these steps as such. Always consult with your dermatologist should you have specific questions about your skin care options.

With that out of the way, let’s get started.

About Me

While my skin is clear for the most part (with the exception of that time of the month - ladies) I do have a flair up of dermatitis occasionally in two dark patches - one on my leg and one on my lip when dehydrated. According to the dermatologist, these have been diagnosed as eczema. There was a cream that was recommended for me, but I prefer a more natural approach when it comes to my skin. These steps will focus mainly on facial care, although some steps can be used for the entire body if altered slightly.

Cleansing

  • Primary cleanser - black soap. I have used black soap for years on my entire body and my experience has been a positive one. I do not buy soap that is “black” in color, as this soap contains dyes and additives which can stain your bathtub and clothing. True black soap should be brown in color and malleable. It can also come in liquid form which is made by using hot water and infusing the soap, water, glycerin, and oils. A nice step-by-step can be found here.  I do order my black soap from a specific company that imports it, however, I will not include the business name here as the shipping times (recently) have not been as efficient as I would have liked them to be. Nevertheless, you can usually find this soap at your local flea market or natural goods store.
  1. Using a small amount (the size of a nickel) work the soap into a lather and use your fingers to gently cleanse in a circular motion on a wet face. Black soap lathers really well and a nickel-sized amount will last you for a week providing that you keep the soap stored in a dry place.
  2. Rinse by cupping water in palms of hands and distributing over entire face.
  3. Use a face towel to remove excess water once the soap has been removed.
  • Secondary Cleanser - Clinique and Trader Joe’s Oatmeal and Honey Soap. These used when traveling as black soap tends to be messy if not stored in a proper container.

Exfoliating

  • Primary Exfoliator - Green Tea Exfoliating Scrub. When I need a combination of exfoliation and moisture, this is my go-to. My skin is always soft without the feeling of clogged pores or greasiness. I purchase this from the same supplier as the black soap. I have previously used a brown sugar scrub, which was also effectively for both my hands and my face. I usually do this in the shower at least once a week.
  1. After cleansing with the black soap as described above, use about a teaspoon of scrub and apply gently in a circular motion for 30seconds.
  2. Using the cupping action above, distribute water across entire face ensuring the cleanser and exfoliating beads are completely rinsed.
  3. If using an oil based exfoliator (such as a homemade sugar scrub) you may want to wash again to make sure oil does not clog your pores.
  • Secondary Exfoliator - Clinique 7 day scrub. This is usually used in conjunction with the Clinique cleanser and moisturizing routine. While the cleansing routing is the same as the Green Tea Exfoliating Scrub, I used significantly less product (approximately 1/4 of a  teaspoon).
  • You can also use a salt scrub, but make sure the crystals are not too coarse as to leave scratches on the skin. I love the Sea Salt and Seaweed Spa soap from Chagrin Valley. When I have this soap, I use at least once a week, if not twice in the shower.

That is it for part 1. Black soap and exfoliate. Easy right?

Part 2 will cover deep cleansing, moisturizing, as well as supplements and cosmetics. See you soon!
